Travel is turning low-carbon: inside HBX Group’s

decarbonisation plan

2025–2030

For hotels, travel providers and destination partners, climate action is fast becoming a defining competitive factor. Guests are demanding more responsible options, regulators are tightening requirements, and major industry players are adapting their operations to a lowcarbon future.

HBX Group’s newly developed Decarbonisation Plan 2025–2030 outlines how we are preparing for this transition — and, more importantly, how we aim to support our partners in the process. The roadmap is built on the Group’s first comprehensive carbon footprint assessment, offering clear insights into where emissions occur across the travel value chain and what practical steps can be taken to reduce them.

Understanding where emissions come from

The analysis shows that around 99% of HBX Group’s total emissions occur in the wider value chain, particularly in hotels and the use of sold services. By contrast, Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions represent only about 0.01% each. For partners, this reinforces a simple point: decarbonisation in travel will be driven by collaboration, because most emissions sit outside any single organisation’s direct operations. These findings underpin our decarbonisation strategy and highlight areas where collective action can make the biggest impact.

A science-based approach to climate transition

HBX Group’s climate transition plan is grounded in climate scenario analysis, assessing how different global warming pathways could affect both the company and the wider tourism ecosystem. The results show that our assetlight model offers resilience, but also that the sector’s longterm stability depends on lowering valuechain emissions. In response, the Group has developed a transition plan aligned with the Paris Agreement for Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions. It includes:

  • practical measures (e.g., electrifying our fleet, using 100% renewable electricity),
  • strong governance and annual monitoring,
  • and measurable emissionsreduction targets.

For partners, this provides a clear benchmark and direction of travel for the industry.

Targets and actions within HBX Group’s own operations

HBX Group has committed to reducing Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 42% by 2030, using 2025 as the baseline — a target consistent with a 1.5°C pathway. Key actions include:

  • Electrifying the corporate fleet, prioritising fully electric vehicles whenever possible.
  • Transitioning to 100% renewable electricity, using certified mechanisms such as GoO and IREC.

These commitments focus on real emissions reductions, not offsets — an approach that many partners and regulators increasingly expect.

Because most emissions are indirect, HBX Group is taking a best-efforts, partnership driven approach to Scope 3. This means working with suppliers, hotel partners and destination stakeholders to strengthen energy efficiency, resource management and transparency. Key areas of collaboration include:

  • Expanding our portfolio of sustainable hotels, especially those improving energy efficiency and resource use.
  • Supporting partners to adopt emissions reduction commitments aligned with recognised standards.
  • Improving emissions data quality, increasing the share of primary data provided by hotels and suppliers.
  • Leveraging existing SBTialigned hotel commitments, helping accelerate progress across destinations.

For our partners, this represents an opportunity to enhance competitiveness, visibility and alignment with market demand.

Working together to reduce value-chain emissions

Turning commitments into measurable action

The Decarbonisation Plan is fully integrated into HBX Group’s business strategy and is reviewed annually. Environmental performance is linked to leadership incentives, with ESG metrics representing 10% of long-term performance indicators, ensuring alignment with climate objectives. Progress is measured through KPIs such as:

  • the percentage of hybrid and electric vehicles in our fleet,
  • the share of renewable electricity,
  • and the number of certified sustainable hotels.

Implementation is supported by targeted investments and continuous monitoring, with KPIs used to track progress and inform decision-making, helping us stay aligned with both climate goals and industry expectations.

Useful resources for partners

We invite our partners to explore HBX Group’s Sustainable Hotels Programme, which is designed to identify, recognise, and promote partner hotels that meet sustainability standards, including those certified by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) or recognised through other credible frameworks such as Travalyst. In this way, hotels can start their environmental and decarbonisation journey, while also helping us to reduce tourism emissions. In case of interest, please write to our ESG corporate email: corporatesustainability@hotelbeds.com.
