How can the tourism sector work to improve the travel experience for people with disabilities?

Accesible tourism:

creating experiences for all

As key players in the tourism industry, businesses have a responsibility to ensure that everyone, regardless of their abilities or conditions, can fully enjoy the destinations and services we offer. This commitment involves adopting inclusive and accessible practices that respond to the diverse needs of people with disabilities, ensuring that every travel experience is accessible and enjoyable for all.

Inclusion in tourism is a foundational pillar for a fairer and more prosperous industry.

Understanding disabilities

Disability is an inherent part of the human experience, and its understanding goes beyond what we can see at a glance. It encompasses a variety of experiences that can manifest in physical, sensory, cognitive, or emotional forms, limiting the ability to carry out typical daily activities.

Some disabilities are easily identifiable, such as the use of wheelchairs, while others, like autism, anxiety disorders, or depression, may be less visible.

16%
of the world´s population has some form of disability.

This wide diversity of experiences underscores the importance of fostering a more inclusive and accessible environment for all. However, physical, cognitive, and social barriers continue to be significant obstacles that limit their ability to fully enjoy tourist experiences.

These barriers range from the lack of adapted physical infrastructure, such as ramps and accessible bathrooms, to the absence of braille signage and audio guides, difficulties in understanding complex information, lack of sensitivity, and technological limitations.

WHAT

CAN

WE

DO?

The tourism sector plays a crucial role in eliminating these barriers and promoting accessibility.

Here are some strategies we can implement:

Investing in accessibility is not only an ethical obligation but also a smart business decision!

According to studies by the UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), accessible tourism represents a significant market opportunity.

It is estimated that travelers with disabilities and their families undertake a significant volume of trips each year. By enhancing accessibility, we are not only fulfilling our moral duty but also expanding our customer base and strengthening our business.

What about the workplace?

Despite the growing recognition of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives often focus primarily on gender and ethnic origin issues. People with disabilities have received less attention in this regard, resulting in significant disparities in the workplace.

53%
of disabled people in UK are employed, in stark contrast to the 81% among non-disable.

Work inclusion as an opportunity

Inclusion in the workplace is not only an ethical and moral issue, it also enriches team dynamics and fosters innovation. Studies by the Harvard Business Review and others have shown that diverse teams are more effective problem solvers. In addition, the presence of people with disabilities can improve the working environment by fostering awareness, empathy and solidarity among colleagues.

In some countries, such as Germany and France, companies are required to meet specific quotas for employing people with disabilities. Failure to comply may result in fines and financial penalties.

In contrast, in countries like the United States and the United Kingdom, laws prioritize implementing workplace adaptation measures to ensure accessibility and equal opportunities for people with disabilities. This involves modifying the work environment, providing accessible tools and technologies, and offering additional support tailored to individual needs. Failure to adhere to these requirements may result in legal repercussions for companies.
