Integration of the Sustainable Development Goals
in the Tourism Sector
WHAT ARE THE SGDs?
The SDGs are a set of 17 global goals with 169 specific targets, designed to tackle the main social, economic, and environmental challenges the world faces. These goals range from eradicating poverty (SDG 1) to climate action (SDG 13), and promoting peace, justice, and strong institutions (SDG 16). Each one is interdependent and requires cooperation and collaboration from various sectors and actors, including businesses, governments, non-governmental organizations, and civil society.
Let's integrate the SDGs into our business strategy to promote sustainable growth and contribute to positive change!
In a world increasingly focused on sustainable development, businesses should consider the importance of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
In 2015, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, a global action plan that includes 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals represent a call to action to address the world's major social, economic, and environmental challenges.
The tourism sector, one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing industries worldwide, plays a crucial role in achieving these goals. For tourism businesses, integrating the SDGs into their strategy is not only an ethical responsibility but also an opportunity to enhance their competitiveness and long-term sustainability.
By aligning with its principles and contributing to the SDGs, businesses demonstrate their commitment to ethical practices and sustainable development. This not only boosts their reputation but also builds trust among stakeholders, positioning them as leaders in corporate responsibility. Such dedication can lead to increased brand loyalty and appeal to socially-conscious consumers and investors.
Adherence to the Global Compact enhances reputation, builds trust and attracts consumers and investors.

The role of the UN Global Compact
The United Nations Global Compact is the world's largest global corporate sustainability initiative, encouraging companies around the world to adopt sustainable and socially responsible policies. It provides a framework for companies to align their operations and strategies with ten universally accepted principles in the areas of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
These ten principles are derived from international declarations and conventions and provide a fundamental ethical framework to guide responsible business behaviour worldwide. By adhering to these principles, companies can not only improve their sustainability practices, but also contribute more effectively to the achievement of the SDGs.
